Regional Internet utilizes multiple Tier 1
datacenter facilities throughout the USA. These facilities (West-to-East)
currently include:
- Fremont, CA (CAF) -
The state-of-the-art 42,000 square foot Fremont facility features gigabit
ethernet connections, raised flooring for excellent air flow, a UPS and
emergency generator for power protection, and more. This location is staffed
and monitored 24x7x365. The network here is ranked among the top in the
nation. Connections ranging from OC3s (155Mbps) to gigE (1,000Mbps) connect
several major exchange points, (including MAE-West in San Jose, CA; PAIX in
Palo Alto, CA; AADS in Chicago, IL; NYIIX in New York, NY; and MAE-East
in Vienna, VA) forming rings around the nation.
- San Diego, CA (CAS) -
This Facility is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. HVAC advanced
airflow monitoring systems ensure proper temperature and humidity levels
are maintained around the clock. Redundant Liebert conditioning units are
found throughout the facility. Dual power generators are maintained for
maximum uptime. These generators feed multiple UPS systems that provide
uninterrupted power to the floor. Power distribution is handled by redundant
Power Distribution nodes throughout the floor. This power system can sustain
operation for up to 2 full weeks at maximum load without power from the
primary San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) grid. On the main floor, CO2 Gas
Powered Fire Suppression systems are used, while in high voltage areas
FM200 systems provide protection from fire. The Network Core is a high
security area housing 10 Tier 1 Fiber connections, and 6 core Cisco routers.
From this room Internet connectivity is fed redundantly to the different
segments of the provider network. This facility is the single most fiber
connected building in San Diego.
- Cedar Falls, IA (IAC) -
The Cedar Falls (IA) data center is in a remote geographical region free of
earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. The facility is over 500 feet above
any flood level, located in a low population concentration area, and over
250+ miles from any major city or airport. The hardened structure, made
with 2-foot cast concrete walls with dual reinforced rebar (and a rubber
membrane to protect it from water sources) is rated to withstand F4
tornadoes. The facility blends into the surrounding buildings in the
office complex - and has no distinguishing features to identify it as an
Enterprise Data Center. The underground design of the data center is for
additional safety. Redundant 400-ton Liebert air handlers provide
enterprise level cooling and fresh air distribution throughout the
data center. In the event of a F4 Tornado, the upper story of the
building is designed to collapse. If that does not happen, the energy
will blow out the building including the internal walls that are the
support structure for the top level. In order to protect the underground
area from the collapse of the ground floor level, the ceiling of the data
center is a concrete court deck that features layers of rubber and fleet.
The Cedar Falls data center is a true underground bunker protecting your
managed hosting and is considered one of the Top 10 safest data center
locations worldwide. The data center was designed with N+1 power
redundancy, which means not only all the power subsystems have automatic
failover, but a 3rd unit is kept onsite as a cold spare. Cabling, fiber
optics, and power are all run overhead, utilizing best practices in a
telecom system data center. The facility is fed by dark fiber directly
to Level 3 in Des Moines, Iowa. From Des Moines, Level 3 provides a
virtual E-WAN service to the Equinix building in Chicago. This virtual
E-WAN service allows direct connectivity to the bandwidth provider,
Hurricane Electric. The network is also fully redundant, featuring
divergent paths that never exceed over 50% network utilization to the
Internet. Divergent paths include dark fiber, OC-48 Sonet Connections,
and multiple high speed connections to different providers. Dual 500kw
UPS units act as backup power in the event of a primary power failure.
These units also have the N+1 method applied with a cold stand-by
available in the event of failure. UPS units are automatically configured
to switch over to diesel generators if more than their 120 minute
availability is needed. This data center has been rated to have less than
a 1% chance of complete power failure in a 20 Year period. The Cedar
Falls data center is equipped with two 750 KVA diesel generators that
have the ability to be up and running in less than 15 seconds. Contracts
with 4 local fuel companies allow for an unlimited amount of fuel to run
these generators, indefinitely if needed. 1000 Gallons of diesel fuel is
maintained inside the generators. Dual FM-200 gas and "Very Early Smoke
Detection" (VESD) systems are utilized inside the facility.
- Chicago, IL (ILC) -
This 15,000 square foot facility, with access to over 24 carriers
including Level (3), MCI, and Qwest, is fully connected to over 350
networks across the footprint. This facility provides worldwide
peering, fast trace routes, and low ping times through an exclusive blend
of Level 3 and Hurricane Electric bandwidth. The Chicago data center is
committed to delivering optimum uptime by utilizing redundant UPS power,
100% generator backup, fire protection, and robust temperature and
humidity controls. Servers collocated in the Chicago facility are able to
have data backed up - and securely transfered to and stored at - the Cedar
Falls, IA data center using one of the most secure methods in the hosting
industry.
- Atlanta, GA (GAA) -
The Atlanta facility is inside one of the two premier Telco Hotel vaults in
Atlanta with access to all the major fiber and IP backbones and the highest
quality of power and security in the city. The facility has complete
redundancy in power, HVAC, fire suppression, network connectivity, and
security. The facility sits atop multiple power grids driven by Georgia Power
which is on the Grady hospital / Federal Reserve grids that were fortified for
the Olympics. This is the grid that is restored first in the event of power
outage in Atlanta and is the most reliable grid in the state of Georgia. The
building is connected via multiple entry vaults on different substations and
is connected to multiple buses within the building. There are redundant
Liebert air systems and pumps, MGE Comet UPS battery backup power, and onsite
permanent generator power. Fire suppression includes a pre-action dry pipe
system that is monitored by 24 hour building security staff and is hooked
into the central alarm facility. This datacenter is staffed 24x7x365.
This network has minimum Internet backbone connection 1 gig pipes. Currently
with 5 backbone providers, it is publicly peered with 12 providers. Current
network connections consist of Gigabit links to Abovenet, XO, PCC-BTN, Telia,
Level 3 and the Atlanta Internet Exchange public peering point.
- Edison, NJ (NJE) -
The Edison facility is connected to redundant OC48 SONET backbones, has
redundant HVAC systems, UPS power backup, a backup power generator and
24x7x365 on-site security.
